Reminders for College Students

Joshua Earle

This week has been a tough week, and it is only Tuesday! If you are a college student I’m here to remind you of a few very important concepts you will need to finish the semester strong!

IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO WITHDRAW

If you are in a class that is not serving you and you want to drop the class, DROP it! Do not be afraid of falling behind. You are on your own path, do not rush your journey. I am sure you all have a relative, friend, or coworker that has told you this numerous times. Listen to them and do not rush things!

I know it is easier said than done, trust me I am currently experiencing this issue myself. First thing's first, silence the outside world (and your brain). Do not get stuck in your own head and think of reasons not to drop the class when you know deep down that dropping is the best thing to do.

Most importantly do not allow your professor or anyone for that matter to guilt-trip your decision. I experienced manipulation from my professor when I asked for approval to drop his class (unfortunately this is the process to withdraw from a class at CSUF). The professor undermined my excuse and made me feel bad for leaving my group with one less person to complete the assignments. He made me feel as if I had done something terribly wrong. A professor that truly cares and understands your circumstance will not make you feel this way.

CANCEL THE TIMELINE

As a student, you have every right to put yourself first. After all, you are paying for your education! It does not matter if you are a freshman or a senior, make use of the time you have in college. Most college graduates struggle for the first couple of years. A lot of them will tell you that they miss college and wish they could go back! So take your time and do not rush through just so you can say you have earned your degree!

TAKE A BREAK

Do not spend hours on end at your desk. Make sure you allow yourself enough time to enjoy yourself and step out of your office. You deserve a night off. Find some extracurricular activities that take your mind off of school and allow you to fully enjoy yourself.

Try the following:

· Go to the gym

· Morning beach jog

· Girl's/Guy's night out

· Wine movie night

· Spa day at Glen Ivy

· Go shopping

MEDITATE

Find time to disconnect from the world and become one with your thoughts. People think that in order to meditate your mind needs to be completely silent. NOPE! In fact, some of the best meditations happen when your mind doesn't stop chatting. This is when you will want to listen to your thoughts because you will have zero distractions.

For those of you that are not ready to hone in on your thoughts, try listening to some meditation music. While you are listening to the tunes be sure to take deep breaths so that your body is able to relax.

Spotify and Itunes have made it simple with premade playlist, just search meditation music and you are good to go!
